Federation House in Leatherhead Surrey, is the headquarters of the Police Federation of England and Wales. It is a truly magnificent building, with contemporary architecture and a unique design. It has an impressive glass roof and a glistening glass façade at the front, which reflects the sky and the landscaped gardens beautifully. Aquamark Cleaning has been working with the Police Federation at Federation House since 2010, and we are still there today, providing expert cleaning for the external and internal windows, and the glass roof.
The challenges
Federation House has some tricky aspects. The glass elevation at the front of the building is hard to access with machinery from the inside. The access point is too narrow for a standard mobile elevating work platform (MEWP). The building also has a large glass atrium roof. When we were first approached by the Police Federation in 2010, the manager said that a previous cleaning company had told them it would not be possible to clean the roof. Well, we’re experts in finding solutions to even the trickiest access issues, so this did not deter us! To complicate things further, the floor underneath the atrium roof has underfloor heating, so it is important that any machine we use does not weigh more than 510kg. And, as all this is done during the busy working day, we need to carry out the work with as little disruption as possible to the staff at the Police Federation.
Aquamark’s expert solutions
To overcome the challenge of the narrow access for the front elevation, our abseil team uses steelwork to descend the wall and clean the windows efficiently – with no need for machinery. For the large glass atrium roof, we use a small one-person MEWP that weighs no more than 400kg. We use a water-fed pole system to clean the outside areas of the roof, and hand tools for the internal areas of glass. Our solutions ensure that every inch of the glass is cleaned thoroughly and efficiently, making the entire building sparkle. Our lightweight MEWP also keeps the underfloor heating system nice and safe.
