When Aquamark sets up cleaning contracts, our team identifies daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual scheduled tasks.
Some are essential to keep the consistency of workflow by the staff through the provision of hygienic areas to work in, while some are for less-used areas of the building. Some cleaning responsibilities are part of a maintenance schedule as well, particularly if you use equipment and machinery.
Often, items like carpets are only cleaned when it makes sense – such as before flea season, and after wet weather.
One job every office has to carry out is the cleaning of the windows, both inside and out. It’s not a job that is required daily, or even weekly for some businesses. But it does need to be completed on a regular basis.
The problems of dirty windows
Dirty windows present problems for different building users. The overall presentation of the office will give either positive or negative first impressions, and if the windows are dirty, this is definitely not going to create a good experience from day one.
Dirty windows also block out natural light, and this is not helpful for staff who suffer from conditions such as seasonal affective disorder, or the less severe ‘winter blues’. This directly affects morale and productivity, and it could mean higher electricity bills through the extended use of lighting.
Staff also feel valued if their office is well-maintained.
Facing the challenge
Windows should be cleaned with equipment fit for their location and purpose. This might include:
- Water fed poles for windows on higher floors – ideal for eco-friendly cleaning
- Cradles for window cleaning
- Cherry pickers, where there is ample space for parking
- Abseil window cleaning
These all require specialist training and qualifications, so we never recommend you take on any tasks yourself. We also don’t recommend hanging backwards out of windows trying to reach a spot of dirt!
As for frequency, it depends on a few factors:
- What kind of business you run
- Who’s benefitting from the windows
- Where the windows are located
In an ideal world, we’d all clean our windows once a week, but budgets and time constraints sometimes prevent it. As a guide, you’d clean restaurant or grocery store windows weekly or bi-weekly, while we’d recommend healthcare centres or hospitals should have a clean on a monthly rota to present a well-cared for patient-centred environment.
Shops – especially those with a large number of customers passing the front – should have their windows washed several times a month to enhance the image of the premises.
Offices should have their windows deep cleaned two or three times a year but should carry out regular monthly cleans to keep general grime and debris to a minimum. Extra cleaning of reception area glass on a monthly basis. It’s a good idea to get guttering cleaned along with your spring appointment.

Don’t face health and safety risks by getting someone in the team to clean the windows. Your HR department will have kittens, and if someone slips, there could be expensive and painful consequences.
